Mapkin - GPS Navigation, Maps & Traffic App Reviews

This app is very intuitive. What I especially love is that it uses landmarks in addition to using cardinal directions for navigation. Its been my experience and that of all of my female friends (with the sole exception of one who was extensively drilled by her former husband) navigate by using landmarks instead of cardinal directions. This well designed app uses both.

Good app have used in several states. Saves on the cost of renting GPS devices when traveling. Highly recommend this app.

Mapkin leaves other GPS apps in the dust. Ive been using it for around five months now. Prior, I used CoPilot or Google Maps. I thought Id give Mapkin a spin based on the novelty of the user-submitted tips. I never looked back. Pros: * Superior voice navigation. Mapkin gives great useful directions; youll get something like "turn left at the next light" rather than "in 350 yards, turn left." The awesome voice nav means you spend less time looking at the screen, which is all to the good when youre behind the wheel. * User-submitted tips. This is the heart of Mapkin. By tapping the screen, or at the end of a drive, you can add tips for other drivers or correct anything that was wrong. Theyll be reviewed by a human and added along the route. Youll hear tips that drivers have left as part of the voice nav. This is great. * It automatically kills the voice nav when youre close to home. * Periodic checkins -- if youre on a long stretch of road with no turns, Mapkin will occasionally pipe up to reassure you that youre on the right route and tell you how long until the next turn. This is great at breaking highway hypnosis when youre driving alone. Other GPS apps should adopt this as a safety feature alone. * When you get on a highway it verbally tells you what exit youre looking for. * Occasional snark when you miss a turn and get back on route. * Its quick to reroute if you go off-route. * Very responsive devs. Cons: * There is currently no system for storing favorite destinations, just a history of recent destinations. * No night mode. The green-and-white color scheme can be distracting in the dark. * Directions for roundabouts are unclear; it will say something like "take the second exit" instead of something more useful like "take the second exit onto route 6 east" so you end up counting instead of following a road sign. I believe the devs are planning on addressing at least the first two of those cons. I havent hit a roundabout since the new version of Mapkin arrived so for all I know thats better by now. (Havent used it in the dark yet either, for that matter.) This isnt really a con, but if you use GPS more Waze-ily (that is, to get to a known destination as quickly as possible no matter what crazy route you have to take) Mapkin isnt going to replace that. Overall, a fantastic app. If you try it out, do leave a tip on your drive to help everyone else!

Mapkin is a superb app! Its easy to use, accurate, personalized to each owner, and entertaining. Any suggestions to enhance the app are welcome by the writer. I highly recommend it!

I cant explain enough how i need and love the option mapkin gives me to select the option to AVOID TOLLS & HIGHWAYS and keep it on every ride i take until I decide to take the option off ! I use this app all the time i love how everyone can give their opinions on the road for everyone. Plus its free app ! Thank u mapkin.

Ive just started using it, and so far it has worked perfectly. I had been using Waze forever, and for whatever reason, it quit working. So while reading the numerous GPS apps out there, Mapkin seemed unique. Plus it has all rave reviews from people. It seems theyre right. The use of directions by landmarks and other "users" choices, along with the regular mileage destinations is a great idea--and a big welcome not to hear the same vocabulary the other apps use for directions. So, Im giving it a big thumbs up!

I have virtually no sense of direction unless the sun is rising or setting. Have tried several navigation apps. Some start out great, but flame out. This app has earned my trust. It reorients my direction if I take a wrong turn or stray. The voice prompts are clear and articulate. I can easily tap the screen (upper left) to get the most recent voice instruction repeated. Theres minimal fluff on the screen. Simple and easy to follow for a cranky old man. I especially appreciate the outstanding and timely follow up and follow through from real Mapkin executives who address my questions. Premium customer service at no cost. Give this app a try if your main objective is to easily get from point A to point B. Plus, they provide useful, relevant upgrades on a regular basis.

I just used Mapkin for the first time and I love it. Its so easy...just enter the destination, start the app, and voila! Easy-to-follow verbal directions, just like that!

Ive been using this app for a little over a week now and couldnt be more pleased with it. I love getting directions such as, "take your second right onto Main St.", instead of the annoying turn right in X number of feet. the interface and overall design of the app is beautiful as well and the ability to pull down to access the trip summary is brilliant. Im hooked on Mapkin and wouldnt recommend another GPS maps app over this one.

I always struggle with finding a simple good to use phone GPS. I had a few installed to compare which was better. I like this one the best so far. Gives you heads up when you need to turn and how long youre on the roads for before you turn. Easy to see map, nice clean looking GPS interface to. No complaints so far!

Great navigation app. Really like the ability to add landmarks and comments about the trip. Hope to see this app continue evolution.
